What Do I Need To Do To Apply For U.S. Citizenship?
If you’ve held a green card, also known as lawful permanent resident status, for at least five years, you may be eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship through the naturalization process, which is an important milestone for many immigrants. If you’re married to a U.S. citizen, you might qualify for this significant step after just three years of marriage. In addition to the residency requirement, applicants must also meet several other essential conditions—such as demonstrating continuous presence in the U.S., showcasing good moral character, and proving basic proficiency in English, U.S. history, and civics. These criteria ensure that those who wish to become citizens have a solid understanding of American values and culture.
Successfully completing the naturalization process grants you most of the same rights and responsibilities enjoyed by individuals who are born in the United States, which is a rewarding achievement that further integrates you into society. At Buenaventura Koss, PLLC, we work closely with individuals and families to help them navigate the complex path to citizenship with clarity and confidence, providing personalized support and guidance throughout the journey.
If you believe you're eligible for naturalization, we warmly invite you to reach out to us today to begin the important process and take this significant step towards becoming a U.S. citizen.

How Do I Start the Process?
During your first appointment with one of our naturalization attorneys at Buenaventura Koss, PLLC, we’ll carefully review your qualifications to confirm your eligibility to apply for citizenship. If you qualify, we’ll guide you through gathering all the necessary information to complete the USCIS N-400 form, which is your official application for naturalization.
If additional documents are needed to support your application, we’ll provide a clear list and assist you in collecting everything required. We’ll also share sample questions to help you feel prepared and confident for your citizenship interview. Once all your materials are ready, we’ll help you complete the N-400 form and submit it to USCIS on your behalf.

What Will Happen at My Interview?
For your naturalization interview, be sure to bring your green card along with a state ID or driver’s license to verify your identity. During the interview, a USCIS officer will review the answers you provided on your N-400 application. You’ll be asked to confirm that the information is still accurate. If anything has changed since you submitted your application, you’ll need to disclose those changes and provide supporting documents if necessary.
Next, the officer will ask you a series of questions similar to those you encountered during your green card interview. You will also be asked to read a sentence in English and write a sentence that the officer dictates. Finally, you’ll take a 10-question test on U.S. civics and history; answering at least six correctly means you pass.
While it may sound intimidating, with the right preparation, the process is manageable. Our attorneys at Buenaventura Koss, PLLC will guide you through everything you’ll face during your interview, helping you feel confident and at ease throughout the process.
